Generally you should find yourself working 8 hours a day in the office, ideally around 9-5. We are happy to be flexible with your hours in the office as long as your schedule allows for plenty of in-person contact with the group. If you're planning to be arriving later than 10am regularly please talk to Simon to discuss what hours you'd like to work. If you'd like to discuss other flexible working arrangements please talk to Simon. See .
Most work should take place in the office. This is to benefit the group, who may need to draw on your expertise, and to benefit you as it is easier to leave work at work this way. Simon is usually happy to accomodate occasional days working from home. To request a WFH day please ask Simon by email or slack as far in advance as possible so he can check whether you attendance is required for meetings etc. For longer time off please book a holiday See .
When working from home it is good to monitor Slack as this will be used as a proxy for coming to your desk for quick questions.
If you are ill, please stay at home. This is so you can recover quickly and to keep everyone safe. Please send Simon a Slack or Email message to let him know you are ill so he can make sure not to bother you and ensure no work is directed your way.
When working in the office please respect others around you who may wish to focus on their work. Many of us wear headphones to focus and this may be a sign that people would like to not be disturbed. The office can be noisey and distracting. If you find this is the case, please do not work from home to avoid the distraction, and instead talk to Simon as we will make sure the office remains a place where everyone can focus. Simon's office also often has a spare desk that can be used for focused work, and if that is unavailable a room can be booked for you.
Simon's office has an open-door policy, so you can come by any time with any question however small. If he is not there please send him a Slack message and he should reply shortly. If you find your a struggling to meet with Simon, or the informal chats are inadequet to cover an issue, please send him an email to book a meeting slot of protected time.
Simon sometimes wanders by people's desks to check how things are going, if you find this distracting just send him a Slack and he'll skip you on his next rounds!
